Eye of the Storm

We’ve got to go somewhere, where will it be
The top or the bottom, trapped or free
If things don’t change we’ll be an amputee
Our soul cut out, the body empty
Like robots, not in touch with ourselves
Are you really surprised at ill mental healths
Always a warning about global warming
Troops moms on the news always in mourning
Kids looked down upon because of their race
The poor cramped up so the rich have more space
Middle class slaves to surpass the rat race
Who’s to blame for this expressionless face
We’re told to be better than the next man
When above him we stop giving a damn
Really hiding behind a smoke screen plan
There’s as much pain here as Afghanistan
People on the streets, no food at all
Some behind closed doors with no-one to call
We have to move fast before we fall
Or no hope for our kids before they can crawl
No tomorrow only pain and sorrow
There won’t be another world for us to borrow
Wake up, wise up, no need to fall apart
Just have to combine your mind with your heart

People flying planes into twin-towers
We condemn them on the news at all hours
But bombing kids is all right from world powers
Increasing divide in the minds it devours
There’s mass confusion, hate in diffusion
What still exists is a racial seclusion
We need positive mental intrusion
With no exclusion, get rid of illusion
The time is coming to end this divide
We have to take pride, listen to our inside
We can decide to defy, what we complied
Stop the misguide and have smiles worldwide
There will still be people who try to disrupt
Cannot accept that you won’t be corrupt
Can’t take your strength, they’ll try to interrupt
But stand tall, don’t fall and we will erupt
Put in energy, even when they disagree
I’m not saying give all your cash to charity
Try and help others be free as can be
Love life and take each and every opportunity
I know this sounds like some depressing stuff
This mad world can shine, take the good with the rough
The stresses of this planet can make our lives tough,
but we can choose to change it, we’re all good enough.

I wrote this while attending university. I was growing increasingly disillusioned with the world around me and had a deep feeling that there was much more to the world than becoming the top dog in salary, status, etc.. This song is an expression of that. As time went on and my spiritual practices increased, the song developed more meaning for me.

A society built on exploitation and greed creates quite a bleak world for everyone. But as the cliche goes, there is always light at the end of the tunnel. It just requires that we stand strong in our quest for a better world and do our best to be part of that change. As Dub FX sang: "My role is small, but I make a change."

I think a big part of that change is transforming the attitude of hopelessness and negativity that many people seem to be stuck in (even when they understand some of the problems of the world), and realizing the potential we have for great growth. But this requires overcoming the divisions we have in our minds: the 'us' and 'them' mentality. Of course there are differences; this is natural in a variegated world. But we must realize that at our essence, we are not so different. Many of the things that cause conflict are actually based on a faulty way of seeing the world, which can be overcome if we so desire.

A person is said to be established in self-realization and is called a yogī [or mystic] when he is fully satisfied by virtue of acquired knowledge and realization. Such a person is situated in transcendence and is self-controlled. He sees everything—whether it be pebbles, stones or gold—as the same.

A person is said to be still further advanced when he regards all—the honest well-wisher, friends and enemies, the envious, the pious, the sinner and those who are indifferent and impartial-with an equal mind. [Bhagavad-gītā 6.8-6.9]

A high realization of the world admittedly. But certainly one worth aspiring for. Storms may brew in life, but the eye of the storm is the calmest region. When situations are getting intense around you, remain like the eye–fixed and focused on your path.
